Amelia, whose friends call her Mia, is the illegitimate daughter of the Prince of Genovia. When her mother refused to marry her father, she didn't tell him she was pregnant, so Mia finds out as a freshman in high school that she is really a princess and a member of the royal Genovian family.
Amelia is very tall and lanky. Her hair is curly and untamed. She feels very self-conscious. Throughout the novel, Mia grandmother, Grandmere, is providing lessons to her on how to be a princess. Mia is constantly writing in her journal. Right before she left New York for her first official visit to Genovia, her best friend's brother, Michael, confesses his love for Mia. This puts Mia over the moon because she has been in love with Michael forever.
Mia tries to continue to be a normal teenager, but her princess duties always seem to get in the way. She also has a tendency to overanalyze situations, which causes her to have wild moods swings, from one extreme to another.
