Why does the priest return to the banana plantation and what does he find when he arrives?

He remembers that the girl promised to help him and thinks she would not get into trouble because she is a foreigner. When he arrives, however, he finds the place deserted. He fights with a dog over a bone that has a scrap of meat on it.
