What transpires inside the hut where the Yankee is dying?

The Yankee clearly is not Catholic and does not want absolution. He wants the priest to take his gun and his knife to defend himself because he knows the soldiers are there. It was the soldiers who shot and killed the Indian boy the Yankee was using as a shield.
