What is the main conflict in The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James?

The novel's main conflict is within Isabel herself..... headstrong and independent, she wants to make her own decisions and express herself as an individual. Because of this, Isabel turns down very legitimate marriage offers, and sadly, makes a marriage that is loveless and prison like.
