What does Prior Philip have the monks of the monastery do when William Hamleigh's men will not let, Tom, the master builder of Kingsbridge, go into the quarry for stone?

Philip has the monks assemble on the scaffolding in the quarry. They light candles and begin to sing holy songs. When Hamleigh's men awake to the eerie scene, they are all afraid to touch the monks for fear of endangering their souls.
