What does The Mask represent?

Erik’s mask represents a lack of understanding. Because people of that time period believed ugliness reflected a person’s sinfulness, Erik covered his facial deformities with a mask. Despite his obsession with keeping his face covered, however, Erik is still forced to live as an outcast.
