Explain what exactly ARE the perks of being a wallflower? (What is so good about being an observer?)

Patrick describes Charlie's wallflower nature at the end of Part 1: "You see things. You keep quiet about them. And you understand." Charlie can stand aside and watch the drama unfold without necessarily being in it. Still, being a wallflower does cause a lot of stress and anxiety to Charlie.
