What is Fennel

Fennel is a paper Jack Russell Terrier dog constructed as a gift for Ceony by Thane. Fennel is given to Ceony because she misses her dog, Bizzy. Fennel becomes Ceony’s constant companion, loyal and courageous to no end. Fennel is a gift of kindness, a creation of love, and comes to serve Ceony well. Fennel thus becomes symbolic of love and creation. Fennel saves Ceony’s life and proves invaluable and resilient on more than one occasion, symbolic of the name “Fennel”, a kind of hardy herb able to survive difficult conditions. Ceony later uses paper from Fennel out of love in order to fashion a vitality chain to protect Thane’s heart as she returns it to him. The love extended by Thane to Ceony is returned to Thane by Ceony, out of love. When the novel ends, Fennel is returned to life by Thane.
