Charlie N. Holmberg tells her novel “The Paper Magician” in language that is simple and straightforward. This is done for at least two primary reasons. First, the target audience of the novel is new adults. The language employed in the novel is reflective of both their age, casualness, and level of education. Secondly, the main character of the novel, Ceony, is nineteen years old. It is only fitting that the language employed reflect Ceony’s age and education as well, for the plot of the novel revolves around, and depends upon, Ceony.
