Sister St. Joseph likes Waddington's manner and good humor. She loves to laugh and finds that Waddington is always good with a joke. She says his manner and wit remind her of a Frenchman, rather than an Englishman. Sister St. Joseph also appreciates how generous Waddington is and tells Kitty about a particular time when he gave the convent one hundred dollars when they were on the threshold of destitution. Her only lament about him is his morals. Sister St. Joseph tells Kitty that Waddington lives with a Chinese woman.
