Kitty had only heard the Chinese described as dirty, decadent, and unspeakable, however as Waddington tells her more about Chinese culture her views begin to shift. Through Waddington's insight she is surprised to learn that the Chinese regard Europeans as barbarians and their life as folly. She begins to see how the Chinese deal with reality and spurn the more flippant things in life.
