When Walter dies, Kitty is sorry for the manner in which he died and has a purely human sorrow for his passing, however her grief is limited. As she contemplates her future without Walter she can't help but feel somewhat relieved to be in charge of her own actions. She feels free from his companionship and begins to feel courage for the future.
