Why does Faye refuse to allow the orchard to be changed or altered after Netta's death in the novel, The Painted Drum?

The orchard is a symbol of Faye's grief surrounding the death of her sister, Netta. Netta died in the orchard after jumping from one of the trees, and Faye is reluctant to see the orchard changed or altered, preferring it to remain dead and hardened-over, much like her memories of her sister.
