How does the author use flashback in the story, The Other Side?

Although the action of the narrative takes place within one day, Gordon uses flashback to trace the unfolding of the conflicts of four generations of MacNamaras. She has assembled a large cast of characters and provided a much-needed genealogical chart for reference.
