When Nella learns that Hazel is from Boston, she worries that she must have had a particularly difficult time. This feeling shifts when it becomes clear that Hazel is as capable as her white coworkers are of waxing poetic about the rich culture, history, architecture, and geography of Boston, an ability that unnerves Nella, who feels that Hazel's attitude toward the city ought to be a more negative one. Ultimately, then, Boston serves as one of the first examples of Hazel's ability to ingratiate herself to her white coworkers.
