Confucius, a Chinese teacher and philosopher, emphasized individual responsibility to one's family over the state. His teachings were banned by the Han emperor, who recognized that loyalty to family undermined his authority as emperor. Confucian ideals were not suppressed, however, and aspects of his teaching were adopted by Chinese leaders, such as the notion that an emperor should rule with the interests of the people at heart.
