Why does Paul and Susan's relationship deteriorate in the novel, The Only Story?

Over the course of time, Susan develops a drinking problem and becomes an alcoholic. As Susan’s mental health deteriorates, their relationship deteriorates as well. Paul soon comes to the realization that he needs to leave.
