Alcoholism symbolizes personal decline and generalized destruction. Gordon Macleod is an alcoholic, and alcohol is an implicit factor in his physical abuse of Susan. After Susan and Paul move to London, Susan eventually develops alcoholism, which is an implicit catalyst for the steady decline in her mental health. This decline contributes to the end of her relationship with Paul.
