Why does Stella place herself between Mack and Ruby?

Stella moves herself between Mack and Ruby when Mack picks up a broom and raises it to hit Ruby.... he intends to make Ruby move by force, but Stella isn't going to allow it. Stella intends to protect Ruby.

Mack grabs a broom. He raises it. Instantly, Stella steps in front of Ruby to shield her.
