Lettieā€™s mother pulls a tin bath from beneath the kitchen table and fills it with steaming water. Then she adds cold water until the temperature is perfect. Then the narrator takes a bath there in the kitchen. Old Mrs. Hempstock gives him a cake of soap and a face-flannel to scrub himself.
