How does the relationship between Precious and Matekoni change over the course of the novel, The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency?

When they first meet, Matekoni immediately falls in love with Precious... her kindness, her care for others, and her smile.

“He thought: I am lucky. She is smiling at me. There is nobody to love me in this world. Here is somebody who likes me and smiles at me.” pg. 187

Precious, however, is leary of men and wants her independence after suffering through an unhappy marriage and subsequent divorce. Over the course of the novel, however, Precious learns to love Matekoni, and she experiences emotional growth that allows her to move on from the past. In the end, she agrees to marry him.
