Why does Spinks claim to have traveled the world and lived in New York City in the novel, The Night Ocean?

Spinks despises Ontario because he feels like it is too quiet and comfortable; nothing exciting happens. Although he remains there his whole life, he makes up a life in which he traveled the world and lived in New York City in order to escape his own boredom.
