What is The City?

The City is where every character in the book came from, but where no one wants to return to. The air pollution is a death sentence for many children who struggle to stay healthy there. In a flashback, Bea reveals that she used to live next to the single remaining tree in the City. It was blocked off so that people could not approach it, but it often attracted many visitors who would view it like an object in a museum.
The City is filled with skyscrapers that stand shoulder to shoulder in a vast sprawl that stretches as far as the eye can see. The outskirts of the city border mines, government farms, and other functional lands that are used to provide resources and energy to the city.
