The Map guides the Community's movements around the Wilderness. However, the Map symbolizes the tension within the group concerning whether or not to follow the rules of the Administration. Bea, for one, believes in the paramount importance of the map. Agnes, on the other hand, does not understand why the Community trusts the map over their innate instincts for animal tracking and path finding. The Map represents the Community's connection to their original purpose for being in the Wilderness. Additionally, it acts as a symbol of the unknown, for parts of the map remain frustratingly empty, like the area around the Lower Post.
