Hair acts as a symbol of Agnes's adulthood. In order to differentiate herself from the children in the Community, Agnes gets a "severe" short haircut, removing her long hair which represented her childhood. Additionally, her desire to cut Jake's hair represents her sexual awakening. When he finally agrees to let her cut his bangs, she feels her first sensations of physical desire. After she cuts his hair, she puts some of Jake's hairs in her mouth and swallows them.
