The necklace represents Bea's attempt to connect Agnes to her upbringing in the City. It is one of the only relics they possess from the City, and they bring it into the Wilderness without permission. Bea does not want Agnes to forget her past, as she fears that if Agnes adapts too much to the natural world, she will lose her ability to understand her daughter. The necklace also represents Bea's presence and hold on Agnes, even when she is not physically present.
