In Chapter Two, Gogol accepts all the food offered to him during the rive ceremony, but during the part of the ceremony in which he is offered several objects that represent his destiny, Gogol refuses to take them, crying instead. His refusal and tears serve as a symbol of Gogol's frustration with his future.
