Another prominent theme in the novel is the question of which is worse, mankind or monsters, and the comparison of the two throughout the book. One of the most obvious comparisons is between Dr. John Kearns, and the Anthropophagi. The Anthropophagi are killers of humans, but they are merely creatures of nature.
