For what purpose does Tilo choose the spices that she gives to Jagjit in the novel, The Mistress of Spices?

Tilo can tell that Jagjit lacks affection from anyone, including his mother, and that he has no friends make his life more tolerable. She gives him the spices she believes will create a friendship but later discovers that Jagjit has become part of a gang.
