McLemore relies on the literary technique of repetition to emphasize Graciela’s determination to believe in herself. For example, Graciela’s first consensual sexual experience with Lock is marked by her internal monologue repeating affirmations of her self-worth. She reminds herself that “there is enough of me. There is enough of me…There is enough alive in me” (175). So much of her struggle in the novel as a survivor of sexual assault centers around the reality that assault erodes one’s confidence, sense of self-worth, and sometimes feels as though a fragmentation of the self has occurred. In repeating how she cares for herself and is allowing Lock to be close to and inside of her body, Graciela signals to the reader a turning point in the novel because she is finally getting more comfortable to take back control of her own body.
