Captain Keller was always fighting with his son James and overpowered his wife Katie in most decisions concerning the family. Everyone was under a great deal of stress and they took it out on each other. James was estranged from his father and did not have a close relationship with his stepmother, Kate. He was always getting yelled at and critisized by his father. Kate was very anxious and felt helpless in how to best treat Helen.
