Why had Kelly's parents not told her about her father's prostate cancer?

Kelly showed her mother photos from her Australian adventures and told her about her experiences and the people she met along the way. It was then that Mary showed Kelly a photo of George taken in the hospital after surgery for prostate cancer, the same disease that took his father. They hadn't told Kelly about it. The family had decided there was no reason to ruin her trip.
