Why does Claire break up with Ben in the novel, The Measure?

When the boxes first arrive, Ben is in a committed relationship with his girlfriend Claire. However, when Claire opens both Ben’s and her own box without Ben’s consent, the couple’s relational foundation fractures. Claire has discovered that Ben has a short string and she has a long string. Terrified of a future determined by Ben’s ominous fate, Claire breaks up with him.
