Why does Latimer take part in the blackmailing scheme in the novel, A Coffin for Dimitrios?

Though blackmail is completely opposed to Latimer's moral code, and though he refuses to take any of the blackmail money, he is drawn into the scheme because of his desire to understand Dimitrios.
