It was shown that Grant realized his error pre-war when making the distinction between the man who volunteered to enlist and the man who served as a soldier during peacetime. One set included men of some social standing, competent and often independent in character. The other often enlisted because he would not do well in any other occupation. Grant may have made up for the deficiencies of some of the men.
