The Macedonian army was different from that of the Greeks in that it was essentially a militia in which the citizens had the right to bear arms. This configuration was both a benefit and a hindrance for Alexander. The people were invested in the army as it meant protecting their land, homes and families. The hindrance came from less training and the overall size of the army. The size tended to be restricted, since most battles were intercity battles, which meant that the groups were unprepared to work together to conquer a larger enemy.
