In the chapter, Wab's Coming-To Story, we learn that her mother constantly entertained men in the squalid apartment where she lived with Wab. When officials began capturing more Native Americans, Wab and her mother lived out of a dumpster. Her mother still had sex, but she began trading for liquor rather than food.
