The narrator's attitude toward life is jumbled and somewhat incoherent. Her thoughts bounce around, the stream of conciousness takes us back and forth, and her timeline is quite confusing..... possibly, we're as confused as she is.

In my opinion, the author's main criticism seems to be centered around marital communication, or the lack of communication between husband and wife. This criticism is subtle, and the the first reading, it likely goes unnoticed. Nevertheless, the couple sitting in that room might be worlds apart based upon their awareness of one another.
