Why does Dorothy toss her medallion into the trash as she enters the Buddhist temple in the novel, The Many Daughters of Afong Moy?

Upon her arrival at the Gotami Buddhist Temple, Dorothy “tossed the medallion into a garbage bin and walked inside” because the symbol (reminder of tradition) had served its purpose, and led her to the real thing.
