Shaila scorns Judith's textbook methods of "managing" grief but agrees to play the cultural liaison out of politeness. Shaila wishes she could "scream, starve, walk into Lake Ontario, [or] jump from a bridge." She considers herself a "freak," helplessly overtaken by a "terrible calm."
