The story presents two different ideas of death..... existence. The Indian is wedded to place rather than time and to group rather than individual. Ortiz wrote, "Indian traditions exist in, and are primarily to be understood in relation to, space; they belong to the place where the people exist or originated," their existence, thus, is metaphorically likened to that of a plant.
