Why does Helen straighten her hair in the novel, The Man in the Woods?

Helen is obsessed with the idea that once she has her very curly hair straightened, she will become popular and all of her problems will be solved, as "Cheerleader types simply didn't associate with frizzy-haired new girls who looked two years too young."
