Early in the novel, Saul is depicted as a victim: of the man who drove into him on Abbey Road, of his cruel and abusive father and brother, of his cold and dismissive girlfriend Jennifer, of the manipulative and opportunistic Luna, and of the oppressive totalitarian state which Saul believes is preventing him from being with Walter.
