When the main character loses his affliction? What has he lost? What does he think he has lost?

Stephen loses his heightened sense of smell and loses a lack of inhibition, thus returning to a more human state. He is relieved when his affliction dissipates but he is also sad. He feels as if he has lost something lost to civilization.
