The nove is narrated in the first person by its main character, Conn. In the closing of each chapter, however, the author includes Nevery’s journal entries, which help balance out Conn’s perspective with a more rational look at Conn himself. As Nevery’s observations become increasingly Conn-centric, the reader comes to understand that Conn is more innocent and youthful than his streetwise narrative voice implies.
