What is the real reason the doctors support the Lenten Ball in the novel, The Mad Women’s Ball?

Although the Salpêtrière doctors insist the event gives patients an opportunity to enjoy themselves, the event is really meant for the entertainment of the public. The ball is thus an extension of the ways in which the hospital is exploiting women for their own amusement or scientific gain.
