In Chapter Seven, at the scene of the hunter's murder, Sheriff Titus is more reasonable than his deputy, but there is a great deal of animosity at the scene. Anita believes the animosity stems from jurisdictional issues. The attitude of the county officers, however, foreshadows future problems for Anita.
