The rabbit-narrator’s imagined world is in fact a myth, which prevents him from realizing the reality of his situation. The rabbit narrator believes his father’s story that, on the day of the Party, the General triumphantly led the herd of rabbits underground, thus ensuring their safety. Moreover, the rabbit believes that the leaves “would make [them] bigger and stronger than any rabbit had ever been” (152). However, by the end of the story, the rabbit-narrator discovers that this story is in fact just an imagined reality or a lie.
