Pachicho critiques both the unequal distribution of wealth and the corrupt government. In The Bird Thing, Angelina remembers various members of the community being found in the river with “fingers and tongue[s] cut off” (176), as her mother implies that the government will “always come back” (176) to silence its enemies.
