In the story, Lucky, Stephanie’s madness is a form of denial, for she vows that she “won’t just be left here” or “forgotten” (15) refusing to accept the fact that her family has been captured and Angelina has abandoned her. In order to cope with this reality, Stephanie resorts to the practice of reading, consuming King Arthur fantasy novels and novelizations of Star Wars movies. By reading these novels, Stephanie temporarily escapes from the reality of her life, enabling her denial.
